Printed Membrane Switch Overlays
All membrane switch assemblies are unique; custom designs developed for specific applications. Now with improved assembly techniques and UK design support ECM is able to introduce the advantages of this superb technology to a greater range of applications. With many modern electronic applications, complex banks of push buttons, rotary or tact switches can be costly, to assemble in both time and materials. A membrane key pad can be used to overcome all of the problems associated with using convectional switches. Designs can enable complex controls to be easily understood, and interfaced by the user.

The diagram above shows the assembly of a basic membrane keypad. Essentially it is made up of a number of layers of polymer film.

The overlay or upper circuit can be made of several different materials to suit texture and environment. Printing is done on the underside to avoid wear. The layer can also be moulded to form tactile switches of different shapes if required.

The next layer acts as a spacer to allow the height for the switch domes, LEDs, or the conductive layer of a poly dome design.

The lower circuit layer is a screen printed flexible circuit that incorporates the connector tail. The tail section is insulated with an epoxy ink, a suitable mating connector can also be added.

The adhesive layer provides permanent fixing for the keypad.

With a specification, prototypes can be supplied in as little as 4 weeks, full production in less than 6 weeks from receipt of order.
